Dormis (Latin for "you sleep") is an integrated sleep system designed to reduce environmental sleep disruption in high-density living environments. Developed as a first-person case study, the project was inspired by my own experience as a light sleeper living in a poorly soundproofed apartment. Research into sleep stages helped identify when I was most vulnerable to waking, informing a more targeted design intervention.
Rather than relying on individual products, Dormis combines earplugs, a layered sleep mask with acoustic materials and integrated sleep headphones, a white noise machine, and a vibrating alarm into a single coordinated system. The project also explores the potential role of bone conduction in transmitting unwanted environmental noise during sleep—an area that has received little attention within sleep product design.
The project progressed through user journey mapping, sound testing, material exploration, iterative prototyping, and three weeks of real-world user testing. The resulting prototype significantly reduced perceived environmental disturbances and demonstrates the potential for a more integrated approach to improving sleep quality in urban environments.
