In 2024, I designed and fabricated a water-resistant, anti-glare cover for a wheelchair-mounted communication device, the Grid Pad 12. My class collaborated with TOM Melbourne, a non-profit organisation that co-designs assistive products with “need-knowers” and makes them open-source for global access. The cover needed to be lightweight to suit the mounting arm’s weight tolerance while providing protection from rain and glare. I selected waterproof nylon for durability and incorporated a removable polypropylene hood for added shielding. I learned how to use a sewing machine specifically for this project. The final product is now actively used, and fabrication instructions and pattern I designed are available for download HERE. It was such a meaningful project and I had so much fun working on it.
