INTRODUCTION
Pseudopolis is an exploration of French anthropologist, Marc Augé's, theory of non-places. They are places of transience without history, that provide no social bond and have no cultural significance. With the advent of globalisation and supermodernity, cities have become more transactional and impersonal. As a result non-places were created to facilitate convenience. They include carparks, supermarkets, malls, food courts, waiting rooms, train stations and freeways.
Real interactions have slowly been replaced by instructions and technology. The world now speaks to us in symbols, signs and warnings. Non-places are everywhere and nowhere, measured in the time we spend in them and the distance it takes to pass through. A means to an end rather than a destination.
This series is a collection of postcards of places that aren't really places at all, only referred to by a set of GPS coordinates. Typically, postcards are mementos of significant landmarks that you've visited while traveling. Something to send family and friends back home. These, however, are merely melancholy souvenirs of a fake city.
